The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is designed to provide entry-level lifeguards with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care until EMS personnel arrive. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course is the most widely recognized and accepted lifeguard certification across the continental United States. Upon successful completion, participants receive Certiontifica cards in: Lifeguarding with CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer valid for 2 years.
Course Overview
Duration: 28 hours (includes online and in-person learning)
Format: Blended learning (8 hours online + 2 full days of in-person training)
Class Schedule: Thursday 6pm to 8pm; Saturday and Sunday 8am to 6:30pm
(Must attend all three sessions for entirety)
Certification Validity: 2 years
Certifying Body: American Red Cross
Minimum Age: 15 years old by the last class session
Pre-Course Swim Test Requirements
Participants must pass a mandatory swim test at the start of the course:
150-yard continuous swim using front crawl (freestyle) and/or breaststroke followed by 2-minute tread using legs only followed by 50-yard continues swim
Timed brick test:
Swim 20 yards
Surface dive 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-lb object
Return to surface and swim back to starting point holding object with both hands (in under 1 minute, 40 seconds)
Failure to pass the swim test results in removal from the course. We do offer Free pre-course training prior to any course.
What to Bring to Class
Please bring a modest bathing suit, towel, sun screen, dry clothes, snacks, water, and goggles (optional). Also, student will be required to submerge without goggles so consider bringing a second pair of contact lenses if you wear them. Student will be given 1/2 hour for lunch and can either bring lunch, buy lunch at the concession stand, or go off campus to get lunch.
